Drone Photography and Filming Guidelines
Aerial filming and photography with drones can give fantastic results. Choosing a day with good visibility is important for optimum results. Strong winds and rain will stop work.
My DJI Mavic3 drone has an excellent camera, gimbal mounted.. Video can be captured in 4K. I also have a lightweight DJI Mavic Mini with guarded props which is safe to use in built-up areas. It is idea for roof inspections and produces reasonable photos and video.
I have a light weight camera/video drone and am authorised to film and photograph in restricted built up areas.
The average length of a video on a website or YouTube for general viewing should be around 2 to 3 minutes, any longer viewers click away. The DJI Mavic 2 Pro has a flying time of around 20 minutes allowing for a little reserve in the batteries. A video lasting a few minutes could require 30 minutes or more flying time especially where artistic results are needed. On the other hand twenty minutes of filming a roof would cover a good sized area.
Regulations limit maximum flying height to 400 feet above ground level and require the remote pilot to keep the drone within visual sight. Filming in heavily populated and built up areas requires special considerations. Safety is paramount and a thorough risk assessment is essential at the planning stage.
